## Introduction
Bread Alone is a family-founded organic bakery that has been crafting artisan breads since 1983, when Daniel Leader and his family moved from NYC to the Catskill Mountains to bake naturally-fermented loaves in wood-fired brick ovens. What began as a humble operation selling bread from farmers markets and a station wagon has grown into a pioneering example of sustainable food production in the Hudson Valley. The bakery operates two key facilities: a Certified Organic production bakery outside Kingston, New York, and a groundbreaking carbon-neutral bakery and cafe in Boiceville that was rebuilt in 2022 as a net-zero facility running entirely on renewable energy without any fossil fuels—believed to be the first commercial bakery in the US to achieve this. The company remains family-operated, with co-owners Daniel Leader and Sharon Burns-Leader working alongside Dan's son Nels Leader.
The bakery has several retail locations, including one in Rhinebeck (featured), which serves as the primary hub for local day nomads and tourists alike.

## Working at BreadAlone
While the bright front café might seem inviting, savvy laptop warriors know the real gems are tucked away in the corridor booths (added in a recent renovation) or the spacious back dining room—both far more work-friendly than the cramped front tables where you'll be dodging the exit-bound pastry parade. Arrive early to claim your spot, because this bakery-café is Rhinebeck's de facto coworking space simply by virtue of being one of the few coffee shops in town with actual elbow room. Just be prepared for the authentic local soundtrack: loud music, boisterous conversations, and the occasional overshared anecdote (noise-cancelling headphones are your friend here). Weekend nomads should especially note that BreadAlone becomes Grand Central Station when day-trippers descend from the city, so if you're hoping to actually get work done rather than just people-watch, stick to weekday mornings when the vibe is calmer and the booths are yours for the taking.

## Atmosphere
A recent renovation gave it a sleek, modern makeover that leans IKEA-chic: functional, clean, and admittedly a bit austere in the dining room. If you're seeking Instagram-worthy rustic charm, check out some of our other picks.
Leaving aside the obligatory local hand-wringing about rising prices and an increasingly esoteric menu, you can still get a solid meal while working. The overnight oats are great (get there early—they vanish by mid-morning), and the breakfast burritos pack enough protein to fuel you through deadline crunch time. Don't forget free seltzer water at the dining room fountain.
Coffee? Decent but not mind-blowing—head to Java Coffee if you're chasing the perfect espresso. But Breadalone's pastries? Outstanding. They rotate seasonal options alongside the classics, and they rarely disappoint. Grab a loaf of sourdough on your way out—it's legitimately excellent. And if you're visiting from out of town, snag some local cheeses from their small-batch goods section; the quality has genuinely improved and makes for great souvenirs that won't break your suitcase.
